The Sustainable Farming Investment Scheme (SFIS) opens for applications on 21 July 2026. If you're a sheep farmer in Northern Ireland, you can get 40% grant funding on Cotter Crates, mobile handling systems, weigh equipment, EID readers, panel readers and Automed dosing guns. The Basics
- Max £25,000 grant per farm business across the scheme (multiple rounds over the next 3–4 years).
- Grant = 40% of the reference price for each item — no quotes needed with your application.
- Investments from £3,000 to £62,500 are eligible.
- Your application score = the average score of the items you select.
- Open to primary food producers with a Category 1 Farm Business ID.
- Apply online via the scheme portal — you'll need a Government Gateway or nidirect account.
- Make sure your registered DAERA email address is up to date before the window opens.

Package 1 — Cotter Crate with Weigh Head
The Cotter Crate qualifies under two separate grant items — the Sheep Handler (SH) and the Sheep Individual Electronic Weigh Package (SIWP). The SIWP covers the weigh bars fitted to the crate plus a Gallagher W-1 weigh head. You can claim both.

Package 2 — Cotter Crate on Large Trailer
Our large trailer option meets the MSH42 spec — minimum 42m of hurdles, guillotine gate, and a trailer permanently integrated into the handling system. This package qualifies under three separate grant items: the Mobile Handling System (MSH42), the Sheep Handler (SH), and the Sheep Individual Electronic Weigh Package (SIWP — weigh bars + Gallagher W-1, which MSH42 must be purchased with). You can claim all three.
